The first generation Kindle device

This device was released on November 19, 2007 for $399 and remained out of stock for five months until late April 2008.
It features a 6 inches (diagonal) 4-level grayscale display, with 250 MB of internal memory (as well as a SD slot) and has a speaker and a headphone jack that allows the user to access audio files on the device.
The Whispernet feature was co-designed with Qualcomm and this kindle became the first device to include free nationwide 3G access to download books from the Amazon web store. The device was not sold outside of the US and plans were initially launched in the UK and the European countries were delayed due to several challenges experienced in signing up suitable wireless network operators.
